Random Thoughts for Thursday, September 19th, 2024: Talk Like a Pirate, Jeannie, Mary & The Twilight Zone, and More!

Welcome to September 19th, a day jam-packed with historical gems, quirky thoughts, and a sprinkle of upcoming events to keep things spicy. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage (it’s officially too late for coffee and too early for beer… or is it?), and let’s dive into the wonderful randomness of today!

1. Talk Like a Pirate Day (1995)

Two guys, John Baur and Mark Summers, decided that September 19th should be celebrated as Talk Like a Pirate Day. Now, people worldwide can get away with saying “Arrr!” in public without being judged… too much.

If you’re going to participate, make sure you really commit to it. Use pirate terms all day at work. Send out emails that start with “Ahoy, team!” Bonus points if you sign off with “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.”

2. Orville Wright’s Birthday (1871)

One half of the flying Wright brothers, Orville Wright was born today. Thanks to him (and his brother Wilbur, of course), we can now complain about airline food at 30,000 feet. Cheers, Orville!

3. The Carpet Sweeper was Patented (1876)

Melville R. Bissell patented the carpet sweeper on September 19th back in 1876. (The Bissell headquarters is in Grand Rapids, MI.) Does anyone actually still use a carpet sweeper? And just imagine how dirty our carpets would be without vacuum cleaners!

4. ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ Premieres (1965)

On this day, Barbara Eden made everyone dream of their own magical genie when I Dream of Jeannie aired for the first time. A show about a 2,000-year-old genie who lived in a bottle (and made every man want to go treasure hunting on a beach).

5. ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ Premieres (1970)

On this day in 1970, Mary Tyler Moore threw her hat in the air and gave women everywhere the green light to take charge of their lives and careers. Plus, she had that catchy theme song! You’re humming it right now, aren’t you?

Random Thought for the Day:

Why is it called a “building” if it’s already built? Shouldn’t it be called a “built”? Or at least a “has-been-constructed”?

Daily Pun:

Why do cows have hooves instead of feet? Because they lactose!

Quote of the Day:

“The problem with quotes on the internet is that you can’t always trust their authenticity.”Abraham Lincoln

Closing Thoughts

So there you have it, a September 19th filled with historical fun, random musings, and even a cow pun (you’re welcome). Whether you’re celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day or looking for a genie in a bottle, remember that life is about finding joy in the little things — like history, humor, and pretending to be a pirate.

Until tomorrow, mateys! May your ship sail smoothly, your coffee stay warm, and your socks remain in pairs.
