Random Thoughts for Friday, September 20th, 2024: Magellan, Elevators, Space, The “Wolverine State” and More!

Welcome to September 20th! We’re in that sweet spot where summer is on its way out but is still clinging on like that one friend who won’t leave the party. Pumpkin spice lattes are back, but it’s also 85 degrees, so you’re stuck sipping one while sweating in your sweater. Ah, autumn in transition.

Let’s dive into today’s random collection of fun facts, quotes, and deep (ish) thoughts.

1. Magellan Sets Sail (1519)

Ferdinand Magellan and his crew set off to circumnavigate the globe. Magellan himself didn’t make it all the way around, but he basically invented the ultimate “long way home” excuse.

2. The Modern Elevator is Patented (1859)

Elisha Otis patented the elevator, saving future office workers from 30 floors of stairs — and inventing the awkward elevator silence we all know and love today.

3. NASA confirms Mars rover collected first rock sample (2021)

Well, it’s about time. Rover’s been on Mars for years, and it’s just now picking up rocks? This is the intergalactic equivalent of waiting until the night before to finish a school project.

4. SpaceX’s All-Civilian Mission Orbits Earth (2021)

Four regular folks went to space, proving that we’re one step closer to vacations that require zero gravity and astronaut ice cream.

5. Michigan became the “Wolverine State” (1850)

On this day in 1850, Michigan officially became the “Wolverine State,” though we actually don’t have wolverines here (well, except for that one rogue wolverine in 2004). But let’s not get bogged down in the details – it sounds fierce, and that’s what matters.

Quote of the Day:

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Clearly, Fitzgerald never dealt with fall in Michigan, where “crisp” translates to “surprise hailstorm.”

Random Thought for the Day:

Folding a fitted sheet is like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube blindfolded. You start with good intentions, but somehow it always ends up as a crumpled ball shoved in the closet.

Daily Pun:

I only know 25 letters of the alphabet. I don’t know Y.

Closing Thoughts

As we bid farewell to summer and welcome fall, remember: life is all about balance. Balance between indulging in pumpkin spice everything and maintaining a shred of self-respect. Between Netflix binges and occasional productivity. Between folding fitted sheets and just accepting that some things in life will always be mysteries.

And that’s your September 20th! May your coffee be strong, your Wi-Fi be steady, and your day be filled with random thoughts you definitely didn’t ask for.
