Rovin’ Ralph Deer Hunting

When November 15th rolls around every year, I can’t help but think back to the years that we sent Rovin’ Ralph deer hunting in the woods with a loaded weapon. What were we thinking?

Old CellphoneThe very first year we tried deer hunting live on the air, Ralph actually was able to get a deer!

He took my old Army brick-like cellphone into the woods with him, and surprisingly, we were able to get a good enough cell signal for him to be able to call back to the station (and that was back in the mid 90’s!). While on the air with us, he was able to fire off a few shots and bagged a deer in November of 1995 or 1996. (When he brought my cell phone back that morning, it still had deer blood all over it…yuck!)

Here is the audio of him getting that doe back then. The other voice you here in this audio is Ralph’s intern “Moose”…

In 1999, Rovin’ Ralph took his soon to be wife, Trixie, into the woods with him. Here are the audio clips from that hunting trip…

Good luck to all you hunters this year. Please be safe out there.

I’ve always been the kind of person who notices the things other people overlook — strange roadside attractions, forgotten pieces of history, unusual places, odd trends, and the little things in everyday life that make you stop and say, “Wait... when did that become normal?” That curiosity is really what this blog is all about. I’m especially drawn to the stories hiding in plain sight: a forgotten piece of Michigan history, a roadside attraction you’d never know was there, an old building with a story behind it, or some completely ordinary part of modern life that suddenly seems ridiculous when you think about it for more than five seconds. Some days you’ll find a fascinating history story here. Other days I may take you along on a road trip, dig into something weird from Michigan’s past, share an interesting discovery, or simply rant about something in modern life that makes absolutely no sense. I don’t pretend to have all the answers. I just enjoy asking the questions, digging around for the stories, and sharing the interesting things I find along the way. My goal is simple: Keep looking. Keep learning. And keep things interesting.
