Firework Oreos

Just before Easter, Oreo came up with Peep flavored Oreos. Now they have come up with a limited edition Firework Oreo! The newest flavor hit store shelves on Monday, May 8th, 2017.

I tried the Peep flavored Oreos with high expectations and was sorely disappointed. To me they didn’t taste much different than a regular Oreo.

Now that I have started a tradition in taste testing new Oreo flavors — in the name of science and research — it was time for me to try the new flavor. (Hey, can I deduct the cost of the Oreos if I’m using them for research for my blog?!)

Firework OreosThe Firework Oreos feature rainbow colored popping candy mixed into the creme filling in the center of the cookie. As I suspected, the candy is similar to the “Pop Rocks” candy that was available in the 70s and 80s.

Upon opening the package, I tried my first Firework Oreo. At first I really didn’t notice any “popping” from the cookie. However, after a few seconds I could feel a popping sensation in the back of my throat.

If you separate the cookie and eat just the creme center you can definitely feel the popping in your mouth.

I didn’t really notice any difference in flavor, just the added popping activity from the candy. Definitely a novel idea! I must have liked them because half the package was gone by morning…all in the name of research I tell ya!

Next up could be a flavor that YOU create. Currently, according to the website, there are 59 different Oreo products. Nabisco is having a contest that you can enter to help them determine their next new flavor. Enter your flavor idea using the hashtag #MyOreoCreationcontest. The winner will not only get bragging rights and “unprecedented fan access to top secret Oreo creations”, but you will win $500,000 as well (yes, that’s a half million dollars!).

Good luck! Maybe the next Oreo product I sample will be your creation!

I’ve always been the kind of person who notices the things other people overlook — strange roadside attractions, forgotten pieces of history, interesting places, odd trends, and the little things in everyday life that make you laugh and say, “Wait... when did that become normal?” This blog is where I share those discoveries. Some days you might learn something fascinating from history. Other days I’ll take you along on a road trip, share a weird story from Michigan’s past, or simply rant about something in modern life that makes absolutely no sense. No matter what, my goal is simple: keep things interesting!

Maybe the peep oreos need to be stale for you to like them…
